Veterans required to report to 49ers camp Thursday

SANTA CLARA -- It's the first day of the new school year for 49ers veterans.The veterans' official reporting date is Thursday. The team's first full-squad practice is scheduled for Friday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Everybody will be in pads for the first time Sunday for another 2-hour, 40-minute practice.The quarterbacks, led by starter Alex Smith, have already gone through several practices this week. Quarterbacks and veterans who rehabbed injuries in the offseason were allowed to report early to camp with the rookies.All eyes will be on veteran wide receiver Randy Moss, who attempts to make a comeback. He sat out last season after playing for three teams in 2010. He arrived for camp Wednesday, a full day early.Moss, a presumptive starter, can rise higher in the NFL record book this season with a good showing:--He needs seven receiving touchdowns to become the second player in NFL history with 160 touchdown catches. Moss can join Jerry Rice (197) as the only players in NFL history with 160 receiving touchdowns. In 13 seasons, Moss has 153 touchdown receptions.--Moss needs six touchdowns to become the fourth player with 160 touchdowns. Moss would join Jerry Rice (208), Emmitt Smith (175) and LaDainian Tomlinson (162) as the only players to accomplish the feat. In 13 seasons, Moss has scored 154 touchdowns.--Moss needs 351 receiving yards to surpass Tim Brown (14,934) and Isaac Bruce (15,208) for third place all-time. In 13 seasons, Moss has 14,858 receiving yards.--Moss needs 46 receptions to become the ninth player in NFL history with 1,000 receptions. In 13 seasons, Moss has 954 receptions.--Moss has recorded 1,000 receiving yards in a season 10 times in his 13-year NFL career. Moss can join Jerry Rice (14) as the only players in NFL history with 11 seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.There is no indication franchise player Dashon Goldson will sign his one-year, 6.212 million tender and report to camp on time. Goldson is under no obligation to sign and report, but he also is unable to negotiate a multi-year deal with the 49ers -- or any other team -- until the end of the season.
Once Goldson signs the one-year deal, his contract for this season becomes fully guaranteed. The 49ers have the right to revoke their franchise tender at any time.Among those expected to report to camp Thursday is second-year player Aldon Smith, who is slated to be the every-down player at outside linebacker. Smith spent about 2 12 hours in a hospital emergency room last month with two minor stab wounds resulting from his attempt to break up a fight during a party at his house, according to sources.Smith has yet to make any public comment about the incident. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department reports it has not identified any suspects and the investigation remains open.Rookie offensive lineman Joe Looney, who was placed Monday on the activenon-football injury list, continues to rehab after he underwent offseason surgery to repair a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. The injury was sustained in January during practices at the Senior Bowl."I'm not really looking at the timeline," said Looney, a fourth-round draft pick from Wake Forest. "I'm just taking it day-by-day, doing what they tell me to do."In the meantime, Looney is running every day, he said. His focus is on learning the responsibilities at right guard. "(I'm) getting in my playbook, making sure I'm on top of that mentally," he said. "Just every day showing up ready to do extra work."
