SANTA CLARA – Coach Jim Tomsula on Monday said he will speak with quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick before going public with his decision of which player will start when the 49ers return from the bye week.

“Where I’ll go with that, obviously, watching film last night and this morning, Blaine did a nice job,” Tomsula said. “He did good things with his feet, his arm and his brain. So congratulations to him.

“Across the board on offensive, everybody stepped it up. (I was) happy to see that.”

Tomsula said he will continue to meet with his coaching staff and will sit down with the quarterbacks before disclosing how the team will handle the quarterback situation.

The 49ers, coming off a 17-16 victory Sunday over the Atlanta Falcons, are on their bye week. They return to action Nov. 22 at the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers (3-6) snapped a streak of nine consecutive quarters without a touchdown.

Gabbert, making his first NFL start in more than two years, completed 15 of 25 passes for 185 yards with two touchdown passes to tight end Garrett Celek and two interceptions.
