Source: 49ers set to meet with Coughlin

The 49ers have reportedly scheduled a meeting with former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin, making the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach the sixth known candidate for the team’s head-coaching vacancy.

Coughlin and the 49ers are meeting on Tuesday, as Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network first reported. Coughlin is scheduled to meet with 49ers general manager Trent Baalke on the East Coast, a source told CSNBayArea.com. CEO Jed York is at the NFL owners meetings in Houston.

The 49ers received permission Monday from the Giants to interview Coughlin. Permission was required because Coughlin resigned last week with one season remaining on his contract. Coughlin interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.

The 49ers are looking for a new head coach in their second consecutive offseason. Jim Tomsula was fired after the 49ers went 5-11 last season. Tomsula replaced Jim Harbaugh, who was let go in a “mutual parting” after the 2014 season.

The 49ers also had known interviews with Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, former Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly, Buffalo assistant head coach/running backs Anthony Lynn, Cleveland offensive coordinator John De Filippo and Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Coughlin, 69, spent 12 seasons as the Giants coach. His teams won two Super Bowls in the past decade. The Giants were 102-90 in the regular season and reached the playoffs five times.
