Source: 49ers pick up Eric Reid's fifth-year option

The 49ers officially picked up Eric Reid's fifth-year option, a source confirmed to CSNBayArea.com on Monday morning.

(The 49ers later announced they have excercised the fifth-year option on Reid for the 2017 season.)

Reid, who has started all 47 games in which he has appeared at free safety, enters the final year of his original four-year, $8.48 million contract. The fifth-year option is for the 2017 season with a scheduled base pay of $5.676 million. The NFL Network first reported the 49ers' decision.

The one-year option becomes fully guaranteed in March 2017, on the first day of the new league year. The 49ers could continue to work on a multi-year extension to replace the one-year deal.

“If we can get something done longer, I think we’ll look at that,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said two weeks ago. “We’re also looking at the fifth-year option, as well. I would expect him back (in 2017) for sure, one way of another.”

The 49ers traded up from the No. 31 overall spot to the No. 18 overall pick to select Reid to take over as the immediate starter. The 49ers lost Dashon Goldson in free agency more than a month before targeting Reid.
