Mike Shanahan’s name has re-entered the picture with reports that he could be back in contention for the 49ers’ head-coaching vacancy.
As the 49ers' coaching search progressed through a 10th day, Shanahan is “strongly back in the mix,” reported ESPN’s Dianna Russini on Wednesday.
A source told CSNBayArea.com on Wednesday that there were no interviews scheduled with new candidates. Shanahan was interviewed for the position last year before the 49ers opted for Jim Tomsula over Adam Gase.

Shanahan won a Super Bowl as offensive coordinator with the 49ers in 1994 under George Seifert. (Shanahan never coached under Bill Walsh.) He served 14 seasons with the Denver Broncos, winning Super Bowls in Hall-of-Fame quarterback John Elway’s final two seasons in 1997 and '98.
Shanahan’s regular-season record in 20 years as a head coach is 170-138 (.552). He is tied with former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin for No. 12 all-time in coaching victories.
