Young: 49ers in ‘perfect' spot behind unthreatening Seahawks

The 49ers enter their bye week as the second-place team in the NFC West with a .500 record through eight games.

And when Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young looks at his former team’s current record, he sees no need to panic. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

“This is perfect,” Young told KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes” on Wednesday. “We’re in a perfect place.

“And look, 4-4 is not where I thought we’d be, but with the division the way it is right now …”

Young described the Los Angeles Rams as “kind of fading” after the 3-4 defending Super Bowl champions were blown out by the 49ers in Week 8.

He doubled down on his earlier claims that the Arizona Cardinals are just “winging it” this year, though things in Seattle are trending upward as the Seahawks sit in first place at 5-3.

“And the Seahawks, let’s just let them play out,” Young said. “I don’t -- who knows? Right now, I mean, I’ve got to tip my cap to them. Geno [Smith], I’ve got to tip my cap to. Pete [Carroll], I‘ve got to -- it’s like, OK.

“But are we really [feeling] threatened [by Seattle] in a big ballgame? No. So let’s go win the division, get in the mix, see what happens.”

After beating the Seahawks in Week 2 and sweeping their season series with the Rams, the 49ers are the only NFC West team that remains undefeated against their divisional opponents.

Things haven’t been so easy for San Francisco outside of the division, however, and after dropping back-to-back games to the Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs, a win over Los Angeles provided a much-needed boost to the team’s morale.

Thanks in part to an out-of-this-world game from San Francisco’s newest running back, Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers’ rout of the Rams put them back into the Super Bowl conversation, especially with other key players expected to return from injury after the bye.

And with a full week of rest behind them, the 49ers will look to keep things rolling against the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 13 at Levi’s Stadium -- and maybe play themselves into an even more “perfect” place in the standings.
