What 2022 draft pick 49ers owe Dolphins from Lance trade

The 2022 first-round NFL draft pick that the 49ers owe the Miami Dolphins from the Trey Lance trade has been decided.

After the 49ers' heartbreaking 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game, San Francisco will give the Dolphins the No. 29 pick in April's draft. The Chiefs, who also lost on Championship Sunday, will own the 30th pick due to their better regular-season record than the 49ers.

General manager John Lynch sent the Dolphins the No. 12 overall pick in 2021, the team's 2022 and 2023 first-round selections and a 2021 third-round draft pick in exchange for No. 3 overall in 2021.

The 49ers ended up selecting Lance at No. 3, and he saw limited action in his rookie season as Jimmy Garoppolo started 15 of 17 games. Lance's two starts, coming in Weeks 5 and 17, saw the North Dakota State product go 31-of-52 passing with 441 yards and a pair of touchdowns and interceptions.

The organization has been firm that they see Lance as the future quarterback for the 49ers, but that Garoppolo gave the team the best chance to win in 2021.

Lance did not see the field in the 49ers' three playoff games, as Garoppolo took every snap in the wild-card win over the Dallas Cowboys, the divisional-round win over the Green Bay Packers, and Sunday's loss to the Rams.

In what likely was Garoppolo's final start as a 49er, the quarterback completed 16 of 30 passes for 232 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against LA.
