There will be no change at quarterback for the 49ers, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday afternoon.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had his worst game of the season in the 49ers' 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night, Shanahan acknowledged. But no change will be made for the 49ers' Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears with rookie Trey Lance trying to get healthy again after a knee injury.
"We didn't go into that game thinking that Jimmy was one bad game away from losing his job or anything like that," Shanahan said in a conference call with Bay Area reporters.

"Jimmy didn't play as good as he could, which he knows that and I know that. I think there were some pretty hard circumstances for him -- for both quarterbacks, considering some of the weather. But I definitely thought he could play better."
Garoppolo completed 16 of 27 passes for 181 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Colts. He also lost a fumble.
Lance was inactive for the game Sunday night after sustaining a left knee sprain two weeks earlier against the Arizona Cardinals. Lance is on pace to be able to come out to practice on Wednesday, Shanahan said. Lance started that game when Garoppolo was sidelined with a calf injury.
"In terms of deciding who's going at quarterback, that has to do with Jimmy's health," Shanahan said. "I wanted to see how his calf was, and it's good today. So he'll be starting, and hopefully Trey will get back into practice and have a good enough week to where he can dress, and if he ends up dressing, there's always a good chance he'll get some plays in there.

"Trey hasn’t practiced in two weeks, so when he does come back, he’ll probably be limited as it is. Odds are when it comes to the game plan, you’re not going to start rotating quarterbacks, because it’s not an open competition right now."
The 49ers traded up to No. 3 overall to select Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. Shanahan still believes Garoppolo gives the 49ers the best chance of winning right now, as the 49ers continue to groom Lance to eventually take over as the starters.
"We know Trey is the future here, and we're trying to do what's before for him and for our team," Shanahan said. "Trey is coming off a pretty big injury, and we're going to keep bringing him along and keep getting him prepared as good as he can be to always be ready to come in and help on the plays we ask him to do, always be ready to take over if Jimmy gets hurt, and being ready to be the future for us, too."
