Shanahan believes ‘pissed off' Jimmy G is good for 49ers

Kyle Shanahan believes Jimmy Garoppolo being upset about the 49ers' blockbuster trade could be the best thing for the quarterback.

Coach Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are not hiding the fact that moving up to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is so they can select their future franchise QB.

The 49ers' brain trust was very open with Garoppolo after completing the trade, confirming that the veteran quarterback is still a large part of their future plans. Shanahan believes that both the team and Garoppolo will benefit from this move.

“I’m sure Jimmy was a little pissed off from it just like I would be,” Shanahan said Monday. “But me knowing Jimmy, he will be fired up and come in and work his butt off. The more mad Jimmy gets, usually the better he gets.”

Shanahan has said numerous times that Garoppolo plays better after he has taken a hit or two in a game. The quarterback’s adrenaline gets going and his productivity increases. He also has been to shake off his own mistakes.

On the 13 drives following interceptions in 2019, Garoppolo's last full season as a starter, the QB completed 36-of-39 passes for 341 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 120.2 passer rating.

“If Jimmy just gets madder and he stays healthy, it’s going to be a good thing for Jimmy too, which could be a great problem for the 49ers.” Shanahan said. “I hope Jimmy is alright with it and I expect him to be, and I’m excited for him to come in here and see what he’s been doing when he was away.”

Shanahan claimed the 49ers are not consciously following the path of the Kansas City Chiefs, who traded up to select Patrick Mahomes with the 2017 NFL Draft's 10th overall pick. He did, however, admit seeing it as the closest possible example to the 49ers' upcoming dynamic at QB.

The 49ers hope to foster a competitive environment with Garoppolo and the quarterback they draft, increasing the level of play up and down the roster. Both Lynch and Shanahan expect Garoppolo to report to camp on time without conflict.
