Report: Packers' Bakhtiari on PUP, won't play Week 3 vs. 49ers

The Green Bay Packers reportedly will miss one of their top players when they face the 49ers on Sept. 26, but San Francisco won't be sad to see him in street clothes during the Week 3 matchup.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning, citing a source, the Packers are placing left tackle David Bakhtiari on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start the season as he rehabs from a torn ACL. This will keep Bakhtiari out for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Bakhtiari, 29, is considered perhaps the best left tackle in the NFL, along with 49ers star Trent Williams. This, of course, is huge for San Francisco's stellar defensive line. Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans will look to take advantage of Bakhtiari's absence.

The 49ers begin the season with games against the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. Both games look like wins on paper. Facing the Packers seemed like the 49ers' first real test this year, and they still will be.

Even with the loss of Bakhtiari, Green Bay isn't going to lay down to the 49ers. Aaron Rodgers still is in uniform, as is Davante Adams, Aaron Jones and other stars.

Why 49ers trading back during 2025 NFL Draft wouldn't surprise Daniel Jeremiah

But it can't be said enough -- Rodgers losing his All-Pro main protection can be a game-changer for the 49ers and the rest of the Packers' opponents while Bakhtiari remains sidelined.
