The 49ers are adding another body to a crowded room full of safeties.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday morning the 49ers are signing free-agent safety Tony Jefferson, who missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the 2019 NFL season.

Jefferson, 29, tore his ACL in Week 5 of the 2019 season as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. He was released in February 2020 and did not sign with another team.
The 49ers brought Jefferson in for a physical and workout last month and must have liked what they saw.

He had 21 tackles and three passes defensed in his first five games before going down to injury when he was last on the field. In 2018, his last healthy season, Jefferson played 14 games and finished the year with 74 tackles, one interception, six passes defensed, one forced fumble and one sack.

Jefferson joins a group of 49ers safeties already featuring Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt, Tarvarius Moore, Marcell Harris and rookie Talanoa Hufanga. At the worst, he could provide solid veteran depth.
