The hits just keep on coming for the 49ers.
Coach Kyle Shanahan announced Tuesday that the 49ers were shutting down running back Raheem Mostert for the season after he suffered another high ankle sprain in San Francisco's Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
It's been a tough year for Mostert. He injured his knee during the 49ers' Week 2 win over the New York Jets, and after missing one game, he returned in Week 5 to play the Miami Dolphins. Mostert then suffered a high ankle sprain during the first half of the 49ers' Week 6 win over the Los Angeles Rams. He missed four games before returning to face the Rams in Week 12.

Mostert finishes his season with 521 rushing yards and three total TDs in eight games. Now, it will be next man up in the 49ers' backfield.
"The plan with the running backs is, whoever's healthy is going to be up," Shanahan said. "Raheem's down. I think Jeff [Wilson Jr.] got out of the game healthy enough. Tevin’s [Coleman] getting better each week. [Jerick McKinnon] Jet's been there for us every game, and [Austin] Walter is on COVID. I think he gets cleared that day. The odds of us playing him that day probably aren't too high, but we'll see how. Hopefully we don't lose anyone else during the week.”

Shanahan also announced Tuesday that quarterback Nick Mullens suffered a significant elbow injury and is done for the season. Quarterback C.J. Beathard will start Saturday when the 49ers face the Arizona Cardinals.
