McGlinchey reveals he has been playing with broken ribs for weeks

Sixteen weeks into the 2022 NFL season, Mike McGlinchey revealed he’s been playing through an injury.

The 49ers offensive tackle told KNBR on Thursday that he’s been playing through two broken ribs since their Week 8 win against the Los Angeles Rams back on Oct. 30.

“We had a combination block where I got foot traffic and I landed on the ground and a linebacker was running through and just crushed my side,” McGlinchey said. “I didn’t really know it was broken until I re-aggravated it in the [New Orleans] Saints week. And I went to get the CT scan, they showed it was bones that were already broken.”

So he broke his ribs on Oct. 30, didn’t realize he did until Nov. 27 and then has continued to push through the injuries for 55 days and counting.

While he never opened up about the injuries until now, McGlinchey reportedly was visibly in pain and making faces while warming up before San Francisco’s divisional clash against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 15. He decided to consult with strength and conditioning assistant Aaron Little in the 49ers locker room.

Twenty minutes later, he returned to the field, finished his warmups and proceeded to play the game. McGlinchey netted a 76.7 PFF Grade, his second-highest of the season and the 49ers won the contest to clinch the division.

“If it gets flared up, it can get really painful, so you just try to do the best you can to keep it manageable,” McGlinchey said. “It’s pretty much done. It was a done deal until pregame against Seattle. So I must have hit something or did something to warm up that tweaked it and had to go take care of it so I could play.”

Even more impressive, since suffering the injury, McGlinchey has allowed just seven pressures in seven games. McGlinchey, 27, said he’s never had to deal with broken ribs before but is ready to keep things moving as the 49ers look to extend their win streak to eight.

“I’m all good,” he concluded.
