The 49ers kept literally everyone on their toes, even the player they chose with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Weeks of speculation led to this moment, and the 49ers made their long-awaited decision -- taking North Dakota State QB Trey Lance third overall.
Lance, as well as the other QB prospects in consideration, were not going to be told ahead of time that they were going to be the pick, as the 49ers waited to have that conversation until they were on the clock.

"I thought you could tell though, I thought you could get a vibe." Kyle Shanahan said.
During his press conference with the media after becoming a 49er, Lance was asked about the call.

“It was pretty emotional for me right away," Lance said. "Just kind of a surreal feeling and, obviously, not knowing what the situation was going to be going into it. RELATED: Why 49ers selected Lance as their franchise QB
Lance was always in consideration for the 49ers at pick No. 3, but seemed to take a back seat to Alabama QB Mac Jones and Ohio State QB Justin Fields throughout weeks of speculation.
On Monday, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch held a press conference where most seemed to assume that Jones was the pick, before Lance became the odds-on-favorite the day of the draft.
Nevertheless, very exciting news for the 49ers future franchise QB.
