There was some good and some bad that came from Trey Lance’s final preseason outing Thursday night, and the young quarterback is focused on fixing the latter before the regular season begins.
The newly crowned QB1 was 7-for-11 passing with 49 yards in the 49ers’ 17-0 loss to the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium, which saw him take 22 snaps across three scoreless series.
“Some ups and downs, for sure,” Lance told reporters after Thursday’s game. “It never feels good to lose, but I’m going to learn from it, turn the page.”

Lance was sacked once during the game as Houston’s defense took advantage of San Francisco’s vulnerable offensive line. During one of the many times he faced pressure, he was able to scramble for a 1-yard gain.
And despite a couple of good throws on the night -- including a 14-yard pass to wide receiver Malik Turner -- there were areas where Lance believes he can improve.
“Some ugly stuff out there,” Lance said after the loss. “Man, definitely wasn’t our best night, but like I said, we’re not going to make too big of a deal out of it.”

In addition to a couple of miscues by Lance, like when he missed George Kittle on a simple pitch-and-catch or failed to connect with Deebo Samuel down the sideline, the 49ers as a whole didn’t play a very clean game, either.
The rushing attack saw little success as the O-line struggled to create gaps, and behind Lance, both Brock Purdy and Nate Sudfeld threw a pick apiece.
Throw in a dropped touchdown pass from Purdy to receiver Willie Snead late in the game, and the Texans dealt San Francisco their first loss -- and shutout -- of the preseason.

Ups and downs, as Lance described them, are anticipated in preseason action.
But the regular season is just around the corner. With that being said, Lance’s words after Thursday’s game hold that much more weight.
“Watch the tape tomorrow, learn from it, get better,” he said.
