Jimmy G takes step forward for 49ers; Deebo misses practice

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo might have taken another step Thursday toward returning to the 49ers’ starting lineup.

But the signs were less-encouraging for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who made it back into game action in Week 4 but did not practice Thursday. The 49ers listed him with a "illness" for the reason he did not practice.

The specifics of Samuel's illness were not immediately known. If Samuel were held out due to COVID-19 reasons, he would have been placed on the NFL's reserve/COVID-19 list.

Samuel played 25 snaps in the 49ers' 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night as he returned off injured reserve from surgery in June to repair a fractured foot. He caught three passes for 35 yards, while also taking one handoff for 10 yards, in his season debut.

Garoppolo, who did not step on the practice field for the first two weeks after sustaining a high right ankle sprain in the 49ers’ Week 2 game, went through a second consecutive day of limited practice in Santa Clara on Thursday.

The 49ers play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

Garoppolo sustained his injury on Sept. 20 in the first quarter of the 49ers’ win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Garoppolo did not return to action in the second half of that game, and sat out the following games against the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles.

He completed 33 of 49 pass attempts (67.3 percent) for 390 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in six quarters of action this season. His passer rating is 118.6.

Nick Mullens started the past two games, but was benched in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. C.J. Beathard entered the game and played well before the 49ers’ late-game rally fell short.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that he would not reveal which quarterback is No. 2 on the depth chart behind Garoppolo. The 49ers selected Beathard in the third round of the 2017 draft, while Mullens was originally signed that year as an undrafted rookie.

The 49ers appear to be short-handed at cornerback with Emmanuel Moseley (concussion), K'Waun Williams (knee/hip) and Dontae Johnson (groin) unable to practice on Thursday.

Shanahan said Williams and defensive end Ziggy Ansah (torn biceps) will be placed on injured reserve before Sunday's game.

Here's the 49ers practice report from Thursday:
