Jimmy G has high ankle sprain, likely out for next week

The 49ers are not expecting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to be available for the team’s Week 3 game against the New York Giants due to a high ankle sprain he sustained early in the 49ers’ game Sunday against the New York Jets.

Garoppolo sustained an injury to his right ankle when his foot stuck on the MetLife Stadium artificial surface during a first-quarter sack by Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

Garoppolo was in obvious pain as he returned to the sideline. The team’s medical staff taped over his right shoe to provide him with more support.

Garoppolo remained in the game to complete 14 of 16 pass attempts for 131 yards and two touchdown passes to tight end Jordan Reed, who was filling in for injured George Kittle.

The 49ers will travel to West Virginia on Sunday, where they will stay and practice at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. It appears likely Nick Mullens will be in the starting lineup when the 49ers return to action.

“I know it being the high-ankle sprain and stuff, he couldn’t go in the second half,” Shanahan said of Garoppolo. “We’ll see how that heals.

“We’ll get on a plane tonight. You wake up tomorrow and it’ll probably feel much worse. But that’s something you probably won’t be able to tell whether he has a chance or not until the end of the week.”
