Kyle Shanahan’s squad is the lowest remaining seed in the NFC playoff picture after wild card weekend, securing the team a matchup against the top seed in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay went a league-best 13-4 this season behind an MVP-caliber season from Aaron Rodgers. The team bounced back from a confounding season-opening loss to the New Orleans Saints and only lost three more games the rest of the way. One of those defeats came when Rodgers was out due to COVID-19 protocols, while another loss came in Week 18 after the team had already locked up the No. 1 seed.
The 49ers and Packers met up way back in Week 3 in an exciting Sunday Night Football showdown. Kyle Juszczyk scored a go-ahead touchdown that put San Francisco up 28-27 with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Rodgers engineered a quick drive in the final seconds to set up Mason Crosby’s 51-yard, game-winning field goal.
Along with the prior matchup this season, the two teams share recent playoff history. The 49ers dominated the 2019 NFC Championship Game over the Packers, earning a trip to Super Bowl LIV, with a 37-20 win. Garoppolo threw the ball just eight times in that victory as Raheem Mostert erupted for 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
