How Lance pisses off Ward at 49ers practice in good way

Trey Lance might be going up against his own 49ers teammates in practice, but that doesn’t stop him from getting into their heads.

San Francisco safety Jimmie Ward spoke about the young quarterback during a recent Instagram Live when a fan asked him which quarterback was the most difficult to go up against: Lance or Jimmy Garoppolo?

The two signal-callers have been compared since Lance was drafted last year, but Ward gave credit to both Lance and Garoppolo before realizing he sees one more frequently than the other.

“... I’m going to say both of them,” Ward said. “Both of them kind of tough, but I go against Trey more than I go against Jimmy just because Trey be running the scout team.”

So what’s it like lining up against an offense led by a No. 3 overall draft pick?

It sounds like it can be pretty frustrating.

“Trey will piss you off at practice, obviously, because he’ll probably complete a pass and then he’ll look at you. And that s--t, that pisses DBs off,” Ward said. “He’ll piss you off because he’ll move out the pocket and throw the ball. And in our head, we’ll be thinking it’s time on the clock, so if he throws the ball and it’s a scramble route … we’ve been covering for probably six or seven, eight seconds, then somebody will catch the ball. And you know you’ve got to get coached on that s--t  and your coach is gonna tell you ‘Finish the play.’ The man was sacked two times!”

Lance has to consider it a compliment when the team’s longest-tenured player is angry about how good he is. And if Ward's assessment is any indication, his mobility is going to be a real problem for NFL teams once he's the starting quarterback

Ward’s hilarious livestream comments weren’t just limited to his own team’s offense. He also sounded off on one of his biggest rivals, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, when a fan asked how it was to play against the wide receiver.

“DK’s straight,” Ward started, then dove in. “I hope Seattle don’t trade him, man, because it’s going to be target practicing, boy. Boy, we’re going to line his a-- up.

“… Please, God, let him stay on Seattle, just for one game.”

As Ward enters his ninth season with San Francisco, it’s clear he still has his competitive edge.
