INDIANAPOLIS -- Jimmy Garoppolo said his goodbyes two days after the 49ers’ season-ending loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
The expectation is that the next time the 49ers take the field during the offseason program in mid-April, Trey Lance will lead the first team offense and Garoppolo will be elsewhere.
As the NFL Scouting Combine takes place, the 49ers are looking to trade Garoppolo while also putting together their list of options to serve as Lance’s backup.

NFL free agency is scheduled to begin on March 16.
Here are four options for the 49ers to consider as their No. 2 quarterback:
Nate Sudfeld
Lance grew close to Nate Sudfeld, who remained on the practice squad for most of the season as the 49ers’ No. 3 quarterback. Sudfeld beat out Josh Rosen for that job during training camp.

Sudfeld came to the 49ers last offseason after spending four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 188 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Sudfeld is best remembered for being inserted into the Eagles’ final game of the 2020 season in the fourth quarter of the team’s 20-14 loss to Washington. That move led to the conversation that coach Doug Pederson was tanking, and he was ultimately fired.
Sudfeld stands a good chance to be back with the 49ers in 2022, but he is certain to face stiff competition for the backup job.
Marcus Mariota
The 49ers would like to get a backup quarterback with a playing style that is similar to the dual-threat Lance.
Marcus Mariota, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, averaged 21.3 yards rushing per game in his 74 career games.
He started 61 of the 63 games in which he appeared over his five seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In two years with the Las Vegas Raiders, he has served exclusively as Derek Carr’s backup.
Mariota is a 62.9-percent career passer with 77 touchdowns and 45 interceptions. His career passer rating is 89.5.
He made $3.5 million last season.
Tyrod Taylor
The 49ers recently hired former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn to take over as the running backs coach for Bobby Turner, who is stepping away for a season.
Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor was with Lynn for three seasons.
He is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons, and his time as a starting candidate is over. He does not figure to be back with the Houston Texans after starting six games last season.
Taylor is a 61.3-percent career passer with 59 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 78 games (53 starts). In his career, he averages 25.7 yards rushing per game.
Mitchell Trubisky
In four seasons as the Chicago Bears’ starter, the team went 29-21 when he started games. But the Bears moved on from the former No. 2 overall pick following the 2020 season.
Trubisky moved on to the Buffalo Bills last season on a one-year, $2.5 million contract. He attempted eight passes all season, rarely getting on the field as Josh Allen’s backup.

The word is that the Bills want to bring him back. The 49ers should be interested, too.
He showed good running skills during his time with the Bears, averaging 20.7 yard on the ground per game. He was a 64.1 percent passer with 64 touchdown passes and 38 interceptions.
