Brendel excited about Hargrave addition to 49ers' D-line

Center Jake Brendel was quite pleased this week to become teammates with a defensive lineman who provided a huge challenge last season.

Brendel parlayed his success in his first season in the 49ers’ starting lineup into a new four-year contract.

In the offseason and training camp, he will see plenty of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Hargrave officially joined the 49ers on Thursday upon signing a four-year free-agent contract worth a reported $84 million.

The 49ers, trying to overtake the Eagles in the NFC, took away one of Philadelphia's top players.

“Success is success, so whatever works it’s great to bring that over to your team,” Brendel said on the “49ers Talk” podcast.

Hargrave, a seven-year pro, is coming off his best NFL season. He registered 11 sacks while starting all 17 games. Hargrave had 60 tackles, including 10 behind the line of scrimmage. Brendel described what distinguishes Hargrave from other defensive linemen.

“I feel like he’s really hard to find a guy in the interior D-line that has the motor he has and the drive to finish that he has,” Brendel said. “And he also is just a fantastic pass rusher.”

Brendel spent plenty of time studying Hargrave in the approach to the NFC Championship Game, and he saw some unique attributes.

“Other than Aaron Donald, you don’t see guys in the A and B gaps have a multi-faceted rush-move repertoire,” Brendel said. “He will look a certain way on one play or one drive, and he’ll look like a completely different player on the next play or the next drive.

“It’s really hard to get a bead on him and expect what he’s going to do next because of how many moves and how many rush techniques he can bring at you.”
