49ers might have advantage vs. banged-up Colts on Sunday

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers have a few banged-up players coming back after the bye week, which could give them an advantage over a banged up Indianapolis Colts secondary on Sunday night.

Indianapolis received unfortunate news when starting safety Julian Blackmon tore his Achilles in practice Wednesday. Starting cornerback Rock Ya-Sin missed his second consecutive practice nursing an ankle injury while position mate Xavier Rhodes was limited on Thursday with an ankle injury.

The 49ers have their own injury issues with Javon Kinlaw (knee) missing his second consecutive practice along with Trent Williams (elbow, ankle), who is day-to-day with an ankle sprain. Trey Lance also was absent from practice Thursday, which indicates that Nate Sudfeld could be called upon to be Jimmy Garoppolo’s back up on Sunday night.

Kyle Shanahan could try to take advantage of the Colts' backups by stretching the field with the speed of Kelvin Benjamin along with Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on Sunday night.

Rookie running back Elijah Mitchell will look to start his second consecutive game after sitting out with an shoulder injury for a few weeks, but with DeForest Buckner and Darious Leonard on the other side of the ball, the 49ers will need to stretch the field to attempt to gain an advantage.

Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel reports that the team won’t change their gameplan for the Colts defensive injuries the noting that the depth in the secondary and their focus on playing team ball will force the 49ers to be focused.
