Reports: 49ers scheduled to meet with QB prospects

The 49ers will have the opportunity this week to get better acquainted with some of the top quarterback prospects.

North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz, considered one of the top two quarterbacks available in this month’s draft, will reportedly visit the 49ers this week.

The 49ers are also believed to be interested in Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook, who is scheduled to visit the 49ers this week, reports NFL Media. Cook and Wentz, whose expected visit was first reported by the Sacramento Bee, are likely to meet with the 49ers later in the week.

The 49ers can also meet with Cal quarterback Jared Goff and Stanford’s Kevin Hogan at the team’s complex in Santa Clara on Wednesday as part of the team's local pro day.

All players from the Bay Area are allowed to visit the 49ers and take part in on-field workouts without it counting as one of the team’s 30 official pre-draft visits.

Wentz and Goff are candidates for the 49ers to select with the No. 7 overall pick.

"I’m impressed with both of those guys," 49ers coach Chip Kelly said recently at the NFL owners meetings. "I think they’re really talented. I think there are a couple of really talented quarterbacks. That will be the interesting thing in this draft -- when do quarterbacks go? Are people going to trade to get quarterbacks? That’s probably the intriguing storyline of this draft.”

The 49ers have not scheduled any meeting with Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, NFL Media reported. Lynch is widely considered the No. 3 quarterback prospect in the draft. The 49ers had representatives at the pro days of all of the top quarterback prospects. Kelly attended the workouts of Goff and Hogan.

Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, Thad Lewis and Dylan Thompson are the four quarterbacks currently on the 49ers’ roster. Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers remains in question.

Kaepernick requested permission to seek a trade in February. The 49ers allowed Kaepernick to negotiate with other teams. The Denver Broncos remain as the team most likely to acquire Kaepernick.

However, Kaepernick has declined Broncos general manager John Elway’s contract offer of $7 million in both of the next two seasons, CSN Bay Area’s Mindi Bach reported last week.

Kaepernick reported for the beginning of the 49ers’ offseason program last week. The Broncos’ offseason program begins April 18.
