Report: Tom Savage to work out for 49ers as possible QB depth piece

The 49ers’ quest for quarterback depth in the wake of Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending injury is starting. And it reportedly might lead them to a former NFL starter.

Tom Savage, who played in 13 games for the Houston Texans in the 2014, 2016 and 2017, will work out for the 49ers, ESPN’s Jordan Schultz reported Monday.

Savage’s Texans tenure didn’t always go smoothly, and he eventually lost the starting job to Deshaun Watson last season. Savage signed with the Saints during the offseason but was released after the team acquired Teddy Bridgewater in a trade with the Jets.

Savage has thrown for 2,000 yards and five touchdowns with seven interceptions in his NFL career. He’s 2-7 in nine starts.

Nick Mullins, the 49ers’ current No. 2 QB, remains in the mix to be promoted from the practice squad, with C.J. Beathard elevated to starter.
