Report: Mangini fired as 49ers defensive coordinator

The 49ers on Friday may not have hired a new defensive coordinator, but they reportedly fired their old one.

San Francisco has relieved Eric Mangini of his duties, according to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.

The 49ers have yet to name a new defensive coordinator.

Mangini spent last season in that position after filling in for Vic Fangio, who left for the Chicago Bears after Jim Harbaugh and his staff were let go.

His 49ers defense in 2015 ranked 29th in total defense, and 18th in points allowed per game. Their 28 sacks ranked 29th, and nine interceptions tied for 26th in the NFL.

Mangini was hired by San Francisco in 2013 as a senior offensive consultant under former head coach Jim Harbaugh. He accepted the position directly from his job as a network analyst.

He soon was promoted to tight ends coach.

Prior to that, Mangini had back-to-back stints as a head coach with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and New York Jets (2006-08).

He served under Bill Belichick before that for five years, serving as the New England Patriots' defensive backs coach (2000-04) and defensive coordinator (2005).
