Amari Cooper had a solid rookie season, one he felt left just him outside contention for Offensive Rookie of the Year. The No. 4 overall pick was the best pure receiver in his class, leading the pack with 72 catches for 1,070 yards, six touchdowns and a 14.9-yards per reception average.
Despite those standout stats, Cooper is probably right. This looks to be Todd Gurley’s year. The Rams running back was named overall Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America, a union of sportswriters who cover the NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs cornerback and Oakland native Marcus Peters was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Cooper was honored on the organization’s all-rookie team with Minnesota receiver Stefon Diggs.
Cooper was the only Raiders on the all-rookie squad. Defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. didn't make it despite several strong games in his first year as a pro. His season ended a little early, with a neck injury that led to injured reserve.
These awards are precursor to the league’s major awards, handed out at the NFL Honors ceremony on Feb. 6 in San Francisco.
Cooper could be among the finalists for that award. Raiders edge rusher Khalil Mack finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting last year.
