Raiders will see well-rested Gurley, Goff in Week 1 due to unusual strategy

Rams running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff will be really fresh when they line up against the Raiders in the season opener on Monday, Sept. 10.

In a bit of an unusual tactic, Gurley, the reigning AP Offensive Player of the Year, won't play at all during the ongoing preseason. Goff, the 2017 No. 1 overall pick, hasn't played yet and Rams head coach Sean McVay doesn't know if the second-year quarterback will suit up against the Texans or Saints.

If neither play this preseason, their first live game action would come against the Raiders in Week 1 of the regular season.

Most star players want to see a little bit of preseason action just to get their timing down after months of practice reps.

But Gurley doesn't seem concerned at all about not playing during the preseason.

"That is everyone's dream to not play in the preseason. Some guys just like being out there to get a feel for it and to see. But not this guy," told reporters on Thursday, via ESPN.com.

As for Goff, he's fine with the decision.

"Whatever they decide to do, I'm on board with. I think we got a lot of good work in training camp through different situations that may come up. But planning to play and see what happens," Goff said.
