Calhoun was a second-team All-American three times in four seasons, and a three-time all conference selection. He had 27 sacks, 44 tackles for losses and four forced fumbles with Michigan State, dominating all comers off the edge. Scouting report: Calhoun was considered by some as one of the most underrated players in this draft. He has good bend and speed to get around tackles and tight ends to make plays in the backfield. He has a nose for the quarterback, but has the awareness and tackling technique to be effective in the run game. Some analysts say he isn’t aggressive enough and doesn’t always play well with his hands, and that he needs to understand when to use the right pass-rush move. He has room for growth, but could already be a solid NFL contributor.
How he fits: Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said. Calhoun will be a hybrid player off the edge, someone who will play strongside linebacker or a LEO position who attacks off the weakside. He will offer support in rotation for Bruce Irvin and Khalil Mack, the team’s primary edge rushers. He is known for good football character, and was a two-time captain for a successful Michigan State program.
Next scheduled pick: Fourth round, No. 114 overall (Friday).
