Raiders sign running back James Butler, waive Chris Warren III

NAPA -- The Raiders have made their first roster move of training camp.

On Sunday, the Raiders announced they signed running back James Butler and waived running back Chris Warren III.

After practice, offensive coordinator Greg Olson explained the seemingly sudden move.

"There are certain standards that we have here, and we expect a certain level of professionalism with the players coming to training camp," Olson said after the team's second training-camp practice. "He did not meet our fitness expectations, so we decided to make a change."

The move was swift and exact for the Texas alum, who became a fan favorite last training camp. He's a big back by nature, but looked bulkier on Saturday during his last practice as a Raider. Ultimately, Warren pushed the Raiders to go in a different direction.

Butler was cut during training camp last year, but the Raiders later signed him onto the practice squad. He also spent part of the offseason program with the Raiders, signing a reserve/future free-agent deal with Oakland in January.

As for Warren, he made a name for himself last summer, leading the entire NFL in rushing during the preseason as an undrafted rookie.

Warren was placed on injured reserve after the preseason with a knee injury in a not-so-veiled attempt to stash the young back. The move ultimately didn't pay dividends, as Warren was replaced on the roster as training camp's proving ground began. Butler should see significant work in practice and preseason games, where Josh Jacobs, Doug Martin and Jalen Richard should see limited action.
