Patriots visit, return to L.A. highlight 49ers' 2016 schedule

Updated on Jan. 12 after NFL owners approved the Rams' relocation to Los Angeles

SANTA CLARA -- A visit from Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots will highlight the 49ers’ 2016 home schedule.

The 49ers complete list of 16 opponents is set for next season with the Chicago Bears’ 24-20 loss Sunday to the Detroit Lions. The last unknown opponent for the 49ers’ 2016 schedule was determined with the Bears finishing last in the NFC North.

Two opponents for next season were teams that placed in the same spot in the standings as the last-place 49ers. The 49ers will play at home against the Dallas Cowboys, the last-place finisher in the NFC East.

The 49ers (5-11) finished last in the NFC West for the first time since 2005.

Next season, the 49ers will play every team from the NFC South and AFC East, in addition their standard two games apiece against NFC West opponents. This season that will include a return to Los Angeles, where the Rams will now call home -- once again.

The 49ers and Los Angeles Rams were top rivals from 1950, when the 49ers entered the NFL, until the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995.
