Not-so-meaningless game? Carr's career pivoted in exhibition finale

ALAMEDA – Derek Carr will join other Raiders fans on Thursday watching the Silver and Black play Seattle. No way the franchise quarterback sees a snap in the exhibition finale.

It doesn’t mean much to many, but Carr respects who enter Thursday with their football life on the line.

He was that guy back in 2014, someone who’s career pivoted in a fourth preseason game. A backup all preseason, the rookie was given a chance to start that exhibition against Seattle. The Seahawks played their starting defense in that final contest, and a rookie Carr went right at ‘em.

He attacked Seattle’s vaunted secondary without fear, completing 11-of-13 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Then head coach Dennis Allen named him the starter a week later.

That game’s details didn’t come flooding back after Tuesday’s practice, but he recalled the rush accompanying the crucial moment.

“I don’t remember specifics. I just remember the feeling,” Carr said. “I can remember bits and pieces. That was the first chance for me and (running back Latavius Murray) to play against the No. 1 defense.”

Carr took full advantage of his opportunity. Several Raiders will follow suit on Thursday and punctuate a summer that ultimately earns a roster spot. Carr is rooting for those players to own the moment.

“That’s an opportunity for a lot of guys to make the team and make a name for themselves,” Carr said. “They get more time because we don’t play as much. It’s always exciting. A lot of people overlook the fourth game, but it’s really exciting to some people. It was really important for my career.”

The final exhibition game comes Thursday. Final cuts are due Saturday afternoon. The wait for news can be dreadful. The lead-up to this final game might cause anxiety. Carr tells younger player to enjoy a moment under the lights.

“A lot of them are stressed out,” Carr said. “I know the feeling. They gave me a chance to start the last game my rookie year, and there was going to be a lot told based upon how I played. I encourage guys to make the most of it, to study hard and have fun. You can’t control a lot of things, but you can control your effort.”
