NFL suspends Raiders cornerback Daryl Worley four games

The Raiders knew when they signed Daryl Worley that he could be unavailable to start the season. The cornerback was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles after an April incident that prompted several charges the NFL frowns upon.

He ultimately pled guilty to DUI, resisting arrest and illegal possession of a firearm in June, agreeing to a fine and probation beyond time already served.

The NFL suspended Worley four games Saturday for violating its policies on substance abuse and person conduct -- an action foreshadowed two nights prior by the Raiders' preseason broadcast team.

Color analyst Rich Gannon said Worley would be suspended four games, and play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins affirmed that statement. Those two walked it back some after reporters asked the team to confirm the suspension, but the prospect was not eliminated by Raiders coach Jon Gruden after the game.

Gruden didn’t comment on a possible Worley suspension then. It is official now. He will move to the team’s reserve suspended list and not count against the Raiders' 53-man roster. Worley will be eligible to play in a Week 5 contest at the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Raiders continually added depth to the position group, adding veteran Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie last week. He joins Rashaan Melvin, Gareon Conley and Leon Hall as cover men expected to play significantly during the regular season.

Gruden said the Raiders will support Worley, despite this setback.

"He is going to be a good football player for a long time,” Gruden said.
