When Washington's NFL team travels to Santa Clara to face the 49ers in Week 14 this season, they finally will have a new name. Sort of.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that effective immediately, Washington will be known as the Washington Football Team as it works towards a new name. Their logo and prior team name will be removed from jerseys and helmets for the 2020 season.

Washington hopes to be completely rid of its former name on digital and physical spaces by the regular-season opener on Sept. 13, Schefter reported.
The team changing its name has long been discussed, and the real first stages finally are here. While they will be known as the Washington Football Team for now, the franchise will have a new mascot in the future.
