NFL rumors: Andy Dalton, Cowboys agree to one-year, $7M contract

The 49ers already have three quarterbacks on their roster, and four if you include undrafted free agent Broc Rutter.

So they were never in the market for former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who was released last week.

But there's a small chance the 49ers could face Dalton during the 2020 NFL season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday, citing a source, that Dalton will sign a one-year contract with his hometown Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys, as has been the trend this offseason, acknowledged reports of the agreement on their site, though it's not official because the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has made physicals hard to conduct.

Dalton will serve as the primary backup to starter Dak Prescott.

So, how does this impact the 49ers? Well, we know that San Francisco is set to travel to Dallas this season, though we don't know exactly when because the 2020 NFL schedule hasn't been released yet.

But if Prescott, who was given the exclusive franchise tag this offseason, gets hurt, Dalton would be forced to step up and face one of the NFL's best defenses.

Dalton faced the 49ers in 2019 when San Francisco traveled to Cincinnati on Sept. 15. While Dalton threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns, the 49ers crushed the Bengals 41-17.
