RB Jerick McKinnon goes on IR

The 49ers on Saturday placed running back Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area. McKinnon had two setbacks as he tried to return from a torn ACL in his right knee, which he sustained one week prior to the 2018 regular-season opener.

RB Jeff Wilson

The 49ers waived second-year running back Jeff Wilson, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area. Wilson started two games last season and averaged 4.0 yards on 66 rushing attempts. He capped the preseason with 100 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers. If Wilson clears waivers, he is likely to return to the practice squad.

LB Elijah Lee

The 49ers released linebacker Elijah Lee, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported. Lee missed the past couple weeks of training camp with a thumb injury. He started five games for the 49ers last season.

TE Daniel Helm

The 49ers waived tight end Daniel Helm and plan to bring him back to the practice squad if he clears waivers, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area. Helm, an undrafted rookie from Duke, has value because of his versatility to play tight end, fullback and special teams.

OL Ross Reynolds

The 49ers waived undrafted rookie guard Ross Reynolds, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area. He is a strong candidate to return to the practice squad.

DL Jamell Garcia-Williams

The 49ers waived Jamell Garcia-Williams, an undrafted rookie from Alabama-Birmingham, reports Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

DE Damontre Moore

The 49ers plan to release veteran defensive end Damontre Moore, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Moore, a six-year NFL veteran, had a strong training camp and preseason after being among the top sack artists in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football in the spring.

G Joshua Garnett

The 49ers plan to release guard Joshua Garnett, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area. The 49ers, under then-general manager Trent Baalke, traded up to select Garnett with the No. 28 overall pick. The 49ers could see if any team is willing to trade for Garnett, who appears to be better-suited for a power-running scheme.

S Adrian Colbert

After finishing 2017 and opening 2018 as the team's starting free safety, Adrian Colbert does not have a spot on this year's team. The 49ers informed Colbert of his release, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported. Colbert entered the NFL in 2017 as a seventh-round draft pick of the 49ers. Colbert aggravated a hamstring injury in the 49ers' final preseason game.

DE Jeremiah Valoaga

The 49ers released defensive lineman Jeremiah Valoaga, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Valoaga, a second-year pro from UNLV, was second in the NFL preseason with 4.5 sacks.

LB David Mayo

The 49ers have informed linebacker David Mayo of his release, reports The Athletic. The 49ers signed Mayo as a free agent to a two-year, $2.5 million contract that included $1.1 million guaranteed. At the time, he was expected to be one of the team's top special-teams players.

WR Jordan Matthews

Veteran wide receiver Jordan Matthews will be released, the Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported. Matthews appeared to be in a stiff competition with Kendrick Bourne for one of the final roster spots.

Defensive lineman Jay Bromley, a five-year NFL veteran from Syracuse, was released, The Athletic reported. Bromley previously played four seasons with the New York Giants before appearing in two games last season with the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers confirmed the transaction Friday afternoon.

TE Tyree Mayfield

The 49ers waived the undrafted rookie from Wyoming, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Friday. Mayfield caught two passes for 12 yards in the preseason. The 49ers confirmed the transaction Friday afternoon.

OT Sam Young

The 49ers picked up Sam Young, a nine-year NFL veteran, after the club's presumptive swing tackle, Shon Coleman, sustained a season-ending dislocated ankle and fractured lower leg. But the club has decided to release Young, NBC Sports Bay Area has confirmed. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the team's decision to release Young. The 49ers confirmed the transaction Friday afternoon.

LS Kyle Nelson suspended

Long-snapper Kyle Nelson held a spot on the team's 90-man roster, but he must serve the final six games of his 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

TE Garrett Celek remains on PUP

Tight end Garrett Celek underwent offseason back surgery, which will leave him unavailable until the middle of the season. He is transferred from active/physically unable to perform, on which he accounted for a spot on the 90-man roster, to reserve/PUP, which opens up a roster spot. He remains eligible for a midseason return, if he receives medical clearance.
