Marquise Goodwin’s TD hours after son’s death was powerful 2017 moment

SANTA CLARA -- One of the most powerful moments of the 49ers' 2017 season happened exactly one year ago from Monday.

Marquise Goodwin and his wife's child was stillborn in the early morning hours of Nov. 12, 2017. At the urging of his wife, Goodwin still played in a game just hours later.

In that Week 10 matchup with the New York Giants, Goodwin not only scored his first touchdown as a 49er, but he did it in an incredible fashion. He caught a pass from C.J. Beathard and took it for an 83-yard catch-and-run score.

Goodwin blew a kiss to the sky before crossing the goal line. He immediately knelt in the end zone, held the football up to the sky in a tribute to his son, Marquise Jr., and then emotionally collapsed to the turf.

Goodwin was very open about his family’s loss in the weeks following the game. He and his wife, Morgan, were pleasantly surprised by how many people reached out and offered support after having similar experiences.

Because of his experience, Goodwin has chosen to support mothers and newborns as part of the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign, which will start later this month.
