Kelly's vision for 49ers: ‘I want them to be fearless'

SANTA CLARA –- Chip Kelly has a vision for his 49ers.

When asked Wednesday for what he wants from his team, he said his goal is to put a team on the field that is unafraid of anything.

“I want them to be fearless,” he said after the press conference to introduce him as the coach of the 49ers, a position he accepted on Jan. 7.

He explained: “Not afraid of any situation you put them in. There are going to be times when its going to be difficult and be adverse, but you have confidence based on your preparation that you’ll see it through.”

It was a theme that Kelly introduced earlier in his press conference about being unfazed by his image and public perception.

"I'm not governed by the fear of what other people say,” he said. “You have to have belief and conviction in what you're doing."

When the Philadelphia Eagles fired Kelly on Dec. 30, it was the first time the end at any of his coaching positions came about due to his failures to produce.

“It’s all part of growing up,” Kelly said of being fired for the first time in his coaching career.

He opted to remain in the NFL, and he turned his only interview into a job offer and his ultimate agreement with the 49ers on a four-year, $24 million contract.

“I love the competition. It’s competition at the highest level,” Kelly said. “There’s a challenge in that. Even on a weekly basis. We lost and didn’t play very well on Thanksgiving in Detroit. Then won the next week in New England. Every week you have to come to play in this league, and you better be on top of your game every week. That part excites me.”

Kelly’s teams in Philadelphia went 2-4 against the NFC West in his three seasons. The 49ers went 1-5 against the NFC West in Jim Tomsula's only season.

The Seattle Seahawks, under Pete Carroll, advanced to the Super Bowl the past two seasons. Bruce Arians’ Arizona Cardinals meets Carolina in the NFC Championship game on Sunday. Los Angeles Rams coach Jeff Fisher has 169 victories in 21 seasons as an NFL coach.

“The NFC West is stacked,” Kelly said. “But that excites you. If you’re a competitor, you get excited about that.”
