Kaepernick practices, on pace to resume competition

SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Colin Kaepernick went through a complete 90-minute practice and said he is feeling fine and proceeding as scheduled.

In a brief, informal chat with reporters in the locker room, one reporter noted that it looked as if the ball was coming out of his hand with some velocity.

“There was a little something behind it,” Kaepernick said, smiling.

Kaepernick, who had not practiced since Aug. 10 due to arm fatigue, is expected to continue to practice this week and be available to play Friday night against the Green Bay Packers.

Kaepernick did something in practice Monday that has not happened against cornerback Jimmie Ward in the 49ers’ two exhibition games. He targeted him for a pass and completed it.

“He made a throw on me on a corner route,” Ward said. “We were in cover 2. It was a great throw. I couldn’t quite get my hands on the ball. Kap was making some good throws today.”

Kaepernick made the throw to Bruce Ellington, his partner during a 30-minute session that included more than 50 passes before Saturday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

“That’s probably the most I’ve ever run before a game,” Ellington said.

Ellington said Kaepernick is throwing the ball well.

“You know you got to get used to that cannon, man,” Ellington said. “It’s good. Kap, his arm is still strong. He’s still throwing it in the right places. As a quarterback with a strong arm, throwing it in the right places, as a receiver, you like that. I felt good being out there catching balls from him.”

Blaine Gabbert started the 49ers’ first two exhibition games with Kaepernick out of action. Coach Chip Kelly has yet to name a starter for the regular season.
