John Lynch's weekend includes 49ers in Super Bowl 54, Hall of Fame vote

MIAMI, Fla. -- John Lynch is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a seventh consecutive year.

He has experienced the letdown in each of the past six years after making it to the final 15, only to be informed that he was not one of the five modern-era candidates elected into the Hall of Fame.

This week, however, is a lot different for him.

As the third-year general manager of the 49ers, Lynch’s weekend is packed with significant moments. First, the Hall of Fame vote occurs Saturday. Then, the 49ers play the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Super Bowl LIV.

“It could make for a pretty cool weekend,” Lynch said.

Lynch was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection as a safety with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. He was twice elected All-Pro. His first year as a finalist for the Hall of Fame was 2014. Each of the other 14 finalists that year has made it into the Hall of Fame.

Ordinarily, it makes for a stressful few days. But Lynch has a lot of other duties this week to keep him occupied.

“I think it probably makes it a little easier, because my mind is elsewhere,” Lynch said. “My mind’s on doing anything I can do, and at this point, there’s not a whole lot. But with the Super Bowl there are so many details that are popping up on just getting to practice and where we’re going and all of that.

"Just making sure we’re making it as normal as possible for these guys.”

Lynch credits the 49ers logistics team of Steve Risser and Mike Slap for handling a good portion of the behind-the-scenes work, including getting more than 1,500 employees and guests to Miami to enjoy the experience.

Lynch also is trying to enjoy the activities and get-togethers that Hall of Fame president David Baker has arranged for all the finalists.

“The Hall does a very nice job, starting (Thursday) of doing a series of events, David Baker and that staff,” he said. “You used to just show up, and you’re in or you’re out. And if you’re out, just get on a plane and go home. See you later.

“Fortunately, this year, my mind is occupied and I’ve got a lot of other duties and so I haven’t thought about it a whole lot. But I have thought that it could be a very special weekend.”
