Inactives: Mayowa starts with Edwards Jr on injured reserve

OAKLAND -– Raiders defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. wasn’t on the inactive list for Thursday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

He’s on injured reserve with a significant neck injury.

Benson Mayowa will fill in for Edwards, as he did after the second-round pick got hurt on the second play of the game. He had four tackles and a force fumble with extended snaps.

He’ll stay on the outside as an edge rusher, while Edwards moved inside on passing downs.

There were no big surprises on the inactive list.

Safety Nate Allen was ruled out with a knee injury. Most everyone else has been a healthy scratch over the last few weeks. That includes receiver Rod Streater and running back Roy Helu Jr., veterans who have been out of the mix most of the season.

Streater has been the fifth receiver since the preseason, which started slow due to an illness. Helu fell behind versatile runners Jamize Olawale and Taiwan Jones, though Latavius Murray is a feature back in this scheme.

Cornerback Neiko Thorpe was questionable with a neck injury and has been held out a second straight week. That means DJ Hayden will see more snaps as a No. 3 cornerback. That might not be bad, considering he has two interceptions against Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

TJ Carrie and Taylor Mays should see time at strong safety with Allen out.

The Chargers will play without a pair of prominent players. Left tackle King Dunlap is out with an ankle injury, and nose tackle Sean Lissemore is out with a shoulder injury.
