INDIANAPOLIS – Running back Carlos Hyde appears to be a perfect fit for new coach Chip Kelly, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said on Wednesday.

“I think coach would tell you he’s an ideal fit for what coach wants to do,” Baalke said. “Very similar to what he did at Ohio State. Big back that runs with power, runs with a little anger. How can you not like that?”

Hyde was the 49ers’ leading rusher last season with 470 yards and three touchdowns on 115 attempts in seven games. He missed the final nine games of the season due to a stress fracture in his left foot.

Hyde underwent surgery late in the season. Baalke said in January he expects Hyde to be ready for the offseason program, which begins April 4. And he's getting some help from the 49ers' all-time leading rusher to be ready.

“It’s doing good,” Baalke said. “I actually talked to him a few days ago. Frank Gore and him were working out in Miami together. It’s coming. He’s not game ready yet by any stretch but indications are he’s healing nicely and we look forward to having him full speed as soon as possible.”
