Veteran running back Reggie Bush has experienced difficulty remaining on the field this season, leaving two games due to a calf strain and being inactive for two other games due to the injury.

Jarryd Hayne became the 49ers’ backup running back on Sunday night behind starter Carlos Hyde. Rookie Mike Davis was inactive for the third time in five games.

The 49ers are unable to re-sign running back Kendall Hunter, who is working out in Birmingham, Alabama, in hopes to landing on an NFL roster this season.

Hunter is ineligible to play for the 49ers this season, CSNBayArea.com has learned. Originally, it was believed Hunter could re-sign with the 49ers six weeks after the length of his injury settlement. That would have made Hunter eligible to return to the 49ers in Week 10.

The 49ers placed Hunter on injured reserve when the team made its cuts to 53 players before the start of the regular season. Hunter had not yet returned to 100-percent health after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

While Hunter is eligible to sign with any other team in the NFL, he is not allowed to rejoin the 49ers this season because the injury settlement – believed to be four weeks – was not executed within five days of the 49ers placing him on injured reserve. The settlement was signed 12 days after he was placed on injured reserve.

Hunter still had a cubicle in the 49ers’ locker room three weeks into the regular season. His nameplate has since been removed. In three NFL seasons, totaling 43 games, Hunter gained 1,202 yards and seven touchdowns with the 49ers with a 4.6-yard average as Frank Gore's primary backup.
