ALAMEDA -- The big knock on Lamarr Houston throughout his nascent NFL career has been a relative lack of stats, or standout plays.But after a big day in Oakland's 26-23 overtime defeat of Jacksonville on Sunday, the third-year defensive end has been named the AFC defensive player of the week.Houston had seven tackles, six solo, with a sack and a game-turning forced fumble on the third play of overtime that set up Sebastian Janikowski's game-winning 40-yard field goal. Playing at left end, Houston reached up and stripped Cecil Shorts III, who was coming from the right side after catching a short pass, and Joselio Hanson recovered the ball.RELATED: Lamarr Houston 2012 game logs
It was not Houston's first "hustle play" of the season as at Denver in Week 4 he ran nearly the length of the field to recover a fumble by Demaryius Thomas.Against the Jaguars, though, his highlights including a six-yard sack of Chad Henne at the start of the fourth quarter on 3rd and seven from the Raiders' 21-yard line, a tackle that limited Rashad Jennings to a one-yard gain just before the 2-minute warning in regulation on 1st and 20 at the Jaguars' 36-yard line and, along with Rolando McClain, stuffing Jennings for no gain on the first play of overtime.
