SANTA CLARA -- Former Australian rugby league star Jarryd Hayne appears to be ticketed back to the 49ers.

Hayne went unclaimed through the NFL’s waiver system on Monday, a source told CSNBayArea.com, clearing his return to the 49ers on the 10-player practice squad.

After the 49ers waived Hayne on Saturday, all other 31 teams had the option of placing a waiver claim for him to join their active rosters. None of the teams placed a claim for Hayne before Monday's 1pm (PT) deadline.

The 49ers are certainly in the market for running back help. The 49ers lost two running backs in the team’s 27-6 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Reggie Bush sustained a knee injury that places his season in question. And rookie Mike Davis sustained a fractured hand.

Kendall Gaskins, who was promoted from the practice squad on Saturday to replace Hayne, is the only healthy running back on the roster. Coach Jim Tomsula said he made the call to promote the 238-pound Gaskins because he wanted a power back available to play against the Rams. Gaskins gained six yards on five rushing attempts in his NFL debut.

Hayne saw limited playing time in the first six games of the season and gained 25 yards on eight carries. He was inactive for the 49ers’ game Oct. 22 against Seattle. Hayne averaged 9.5 yards on eight punt returns.

The 49ers are scheduled to host free-agent running back Ben Tate for visit and workout on Tuesday, a source confirmed.

Tate, 27, played for Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh last season, rushing for a combined 390 yards on 124 rushing attempts with four touchdowns. Tate spent his first three NFL seasons with the Houston Texans. His best season was in 2011 as a rookie when he gained 942 yards with four touchdowns.

The 49ers hosted former New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas on a visit two weeks ago -- shortly after Hyde was diagnosed with the stress fracture of his fifth metatarsal.
