GM John Lynch hints he is near contract extension to remain with 49ers

Jonh Lynch suggested Tuesday that he is nearing agreement on a new contract to remain as 49ers general manager for the foreseeable future.

Lynch said on KNBR that contract discussions with CEO Jed York have resumed after things came to a standstill during the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

“Jed, true to his word, we picked it back up,” Lynch said Tuesday morning on the Murph & Mac Show. “I can tell you, I think there’s some good news around the corner.”

The 49ers and coach Kyle Shanahan agreed to a contract extension shortly after the Super Bowl that keeps him under contract with the team through the 2025 season. Lynch’s original six-year contract still has three years remaining on it. Lynch's next contract is likely to match Shanahan's length of commitment.

The team’s priority was to get a new deal for Shanahan, whose salary had fallen to near the bottom of the NFL. Shanahan now is near the top of the NFL pay scale. Meanwhile, Lynch’s contract is still competitive among the top general managers in the league.

“Frankly, I came in at a good number because I was making real good money at FOX, and Jed and Kyle decided they wanted me, and I had a pretty good gig going so it was going to take a lot to get me here,” Lynch said. “So I came in kind of top of market or right there. Kyle didn’t. He was a first-time head coach, so I understood Kyle was going to go first.”

Lynch, 48, was a nine-time Pro Bowl safety with Tampa Bay and Denver. After his playing career, he served as an analyst on FOX’s TV broadcasts. The 49ers hired him as general manager in 2017, and he was named Executive of the Year last season by the Pro Football Writers of America.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be a lifer at this thing, but I love what we’re doing,” Lynch said. “I love coming to work each and every day, and I think there’s some good news on the horizon. Jed and the York family have been tremendous to me. Hopefully, we have some good news here soon.”
