SANTA CLARA –- Quarterback Blaine Gabbert and a half-dozen of the team’s wide receivers got together at San Jose State for pre-training camp work this week.
“Blaine threw the other day,” 49ers receiver Torrey Smith said. “It wasn’t like he rallied everyone together. It was, ‘Who’s in town? Let’s go.’”

Colin Kaepernick did not attend the session. Smith said Kaepernick was traveling – perhaps in Colorado for his final checkup on the surgeries on his shoulder, knee and thumb.
Smith said he was helping organize quarterback-receiver sessions earlier in the offseason. But Smith canceled the plans when his wife gave birth a baby boy in June.
With Anquan Boldin signing with the Detroit Lions, Smith is now the veteran receiver in the room.
“It’s definitely a little more pressure,” Smith said. “Before there was Anquan to be more of a veteran presence as well as Jerome (Simpson). Now it’s just two of us. There’s more responsibility for us to share. I just want to make sure I’m doing things the right way, trying to lead by example.”
