The 49ers have nine scheduled picks in this week’s draft.Bold prediction No. 1: They will not end the three-day affair with nine rookies vying for roles on their roster. Will they accumulate more picks or fewer?Be patient. We will get there shortly as we make the following bold predictions about the 49ers upcoming draft weekend:

After the 49ers make their selection at No. 3 overall, why wait around for the inevitable to occur? The rookie will take over at some point. Why not just do it now?
Colleague Josh Schrock beat me to the punch with his bold prediction of Garoppolo being dealt. Perhaps, now, the bolder prediction is that Garoppolo will be the 49ers’ starting QB this season.
Coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said he could not guarantee Garoppolo will still be on the team when the draft concludes. His reasoning was a bit morbid.
"I can't guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive Sunday, so I can't guarantee who will be on our roster come Sunday," Shanahan said. "So that goes for all of us."

The most likely destination for Garoppolo is New England, of course.
Would the Patriots give up a second-round pick for Garoppolo? That way, they’d basically be sending the 49ers back the second-round pick that Bill Belichick demanded in 2017.
In the world of draft trades, a second-round pick this year is worth a first-round pick next year.
Using that logic, it seems reasonable the Pats would send the 49ers a first-round pick in 2022.
The 49ers traded first-round picks in 2022 and ’23, along with a third-rounder in ’22, to trade up from No. 12 to No. 3. If the 49ers can get a future first-round pick for Garoppolo, that’s a win.

With this roster, there is no way nine rookies will be able to win roster spots.
The 49ers do not need bodies, they need good players to fit specific roles. That is why they need to accumulate more picks during Day 2 of the draft and trade away most of their picks after the fourth round.
One way to accomplish that goal is to trade back from No. 43 overall to pick up more draft capital. Then, they can parlay their three fifth-round picks to move up and, perhaps, get as many as five picks within the first 100 or so selections.
If the 49ers play it well, they can add a cornerback, explosive slot receiver and help on both lines.

The 49ers’ offense has lacked a true slot receiver and an explosive change-of-pace back.
On Day 2 of the draft, the 49ers will focus on getting help for the quarterback they pick at No. 3 overall.
In 2017, the 49ers thought they had their slot receiver with Trent Taylor. But injuries limited his effectiveness. The 49ers signed Jerick McKinnon as a free agent in 2018 because of his route-running skills. He did not step onto the field for two years due a torn ACL and complications from the original surgery.
The 49ers could look to add a slot and a pass-catching running back. Or, they could select Amari Rodgers of Clemson, who is capable of filling both spots.

It is a good draft for cornerbacks.
But if the 49ers find themselves in a position of liking players at other positions through two days of the draft, maybe they can look to bring back Richard Sherman on a one-year deal.
The free-agent market was slow for Sherman. He said teams want to fill needs in the draft before committing to signing him.
The 49ers could join the veteran free-agent market, and they could certainly do a lot worse than re-signing Sherman.
The only question is whether the 49ers would rather have Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley in those starting jobs.
