A former 49ers assistant coach will replace Urban Meyer as Ohio State’s head football coach, the university announced Tuesday.
Ryan Day, who spent the 2016 season as Chip Kelly’s quarterbacks coach with the 49ers, reportedly has agreed to a five-year contract to take over for Meyer, who will retire after the Rose Bowl.
Day spent the past two seasons as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He is in his 17th season as a coach in the NFL or college ranks. He initially joined Kelly’s staff in 2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

SIGN UP HERE In his one season with the 49ers, Day worked with Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert.
Kaepernick completed 196 of 331 pass attempts (59.2 percent) for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns with four interceptions in 11 starts. His passer rating was 90.7. Kaepernick also was the team’s second-leading rusher with 468 yards and two touchdowns on 69 rushing attempts.
Gabbert, who remains in the NFL, started the first five games of the 2016 season before being benched. He completed 91 of 160 passes (56.9 percent) for 925 yards and five touchdowns with six interceptions for a 68.4 passer rating.
Kelly was fired after the 49ers went 2-14 in 2016, and Day immediately landed a job, joining Meyer's staff at Ohio State.
