After wearing No. 22 in 2006 and 2007, Hanson switched to No. 21 in 2008, when Asante Samuel arrived. Hanson has worn 21 since.
Asomugha? He wore No. 21 all eight of his seasons with the Raiders.
Pro athletes are funny about their numbers. They often hold special significance. And guys will do anything to get the number they really want. Changing numbers in mid-career is bad luck.
So when a guy who signs a huge new contract finds that his former number is taken, protocol calls for the new player offering the incumbent a giant pile of cash.
