Cosell: Goff better prospect than 2015 No. 1 pick Winston

The NFL draft evaluation process has begun and Cal quarterback Jared Goff has been at the center of plenty of conversations.

Is he the No. 1 quarterback? Is he worth a top-10 selection? Is he as good as the top passers in draft classes before him?

With scouts growing fonder of Memphis' Paxton Lynch and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz, nothing is certain at this point.

But one well-respected evaluator, NFL Films' Greg Cosell, provided his take on Goff, a Bay Area native.

"My initial study of Goff tells me that I think he is a more natural and better overall thrower than (Titans QB Marcus) Mariota. I think he's a better prospect than Jameis Winston," Cosell said Wednesday on 104.5 The Zone. "Where he goes? I can't answer that, but from studying it preliminarily, that's how I see it with Jared Goff."

Winston as a rookie completed 58.3 percent of his passes for 4,042 passing yards and 22 touchdowns to 15 interceptions.

Goff led the NCAA in touchdowns over his final two seasons at Cal.

"Winston had a very nice rookie season and it looks like he'll be a solid player. How good? No one can answer that at this moment," Cosell added. "I'm just comparing Goff. And again, I haven't done as much work on Goff as I did on Winston when I was done with the process last year, but that's the basis of my comparison."

The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers are the two teams picking in the top 10 most connected to quarterbacks in this draft class.

But which system would Goff fit best, according to Cosell?

"I think Goff fits any system. I don't think Goff is system specific. I think his skill set, his throwing skill set, his looseness as an athlete, his light feet, I think he fits, theoretically, any system. He would be my choice right now (for the Browns). He could run (head coach) Hue Jackson's system no problem."

The 2016 NFL Draft will be held April 28-30. The Browns have the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, while the 49ers hold the No. 7 overall selection.
